Content
The Steno Thursdays events aim to disseminate exciting diabetes research from clinical- and biomedicine to epidemiology. Most presentations are given by researchers affiliated to or collaborating with SDCA. We host Steno Thursdays Global once a month, featuring international diabetes experts.
There will be room for questions and discussions following every talk.
How often
Thursdays, 14:15-15:00 in Verdensrummet, Steno Diabetes Center Aarhus
PROGRAMME: April
Thursday 4
Speaker: Demitry Postnov, Associate professor, Department of Clinical Medicine, Center of Functionally Integrative Neuroscience, Aarhus University Hospital
"DIABENTIA: Unravelling Microvascular Link Between Diabetes and Dementia – a Pivotal Role of Microvascular Stiffness"
Summary: In the DIABENTIA project, we aim to establish the role of microvascular stiffness in the cognitive decline associated with type 2 diabetes. To achieve this aim, we will characterise functional and structural microcirculation feathers in animal models and diabetes patients using a unique set of non-invasive imaging technologies. As the project is in its earliest phase - the presentation will cover the hypotheses, methods and protocols rather than the study results.
Thursday 11
Steno Global
Speaker: Ljubica Matic, Assistant Professor, Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery & Center for Molecular Medicine, Karolinska Institute.
"Biobanking for accelerated target discovery: Harnessing the potential of smooth muscle cells for translation in vascular disease"
Summary: This lecture will give an overview of the Biobank of Karolinska Endarterectomy (BiKE, est 2002, approx 2000 patients) as a large resource that enables integrated multi-omics studies to discover novel therapeutic targets and biomarkers of atherosclerosis. The lecture will also deep dive into the mechanisms od smooth muscle cell trans-differentiations in vascular disease and how this potential can be harnessed for translational approaches.

Meeting ID: 622 0478 9249
Thursday 18
Speaker:Emma Börgeson, Associate professor Steno Diabetes Center Aarhus.
"Pro-resolving therapeutic targets in diabetes and cardiometabolic disease"
Summary:Obesity-related cardiometabolic diseases are fuelled by adipose tissue and systemic low-grade inflammation. Drugs targeting pro-inflammatory pathways have therefore been suggested as a therapeutic strategy to reduce cardiometabolic pathophysiology, and clinical trials have demonstrated the promising potential of this approach. However, traditional anti-inflammatory drugs may have serious side effects, such as increased susceptibility to infections, and they do not stimulate resolution mechanisms. Therefore, are investigating the possibility to use pro-resolvong agents, such as the lipoxins, to enhance endogenous resolution mechanisms as an alternative strategy.
Thursday 25
Speaker: Jakob Tarp, Department of Clinical Epidemiology Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital.
"Physical activity and health outcomes – examples from the UK Biobank research resource"
Summary: UK Biobank is a large-scale biomedical database and research resource containing de-identified genetic, lifestyle and health information and biological samples from half a million UK participants. Using physical activity as an example, this presentation will demonstrate how UK Biobank can be used to address a range of different research questions, from public health to clinical populations.
