Research description

  • Ketone bodies and lactate in human metabolism, cardiac function, and exercise

Lactate and ketone bodies have for long been considered by-products of glucose oxidation and oxidation of fatty acids respectively. In recent years, however, intense research indicates that both are energy-rich substrates usable in the heart and skeletal muscle, in particular under metabolic stress, exercise and/or heart failure. We therefore wish to investigate if exogenous supplement of ketone bodies and lactate additively or synergistically will improve substrate metabolism (lipolysis and insulin sensitivity), cardiac function and/or exercise performance.
