Pre-meal consumption of whey protein in gestational diabetes mellitus. The prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is increasing worldwide and the disease is associated with obstetrical complications and increased risk of diabetes in both mother and offspring. Strict glycemic control during GDM pregnancies is crucial and mainly achieved through nutritional optimization. Even so, little research exists regarding nutritional glucose-lowering interventions. Whey protein supplements have glucose-lowering effects in healthy and type 2 diabetic patients. I investigate if this also applies to GDM, specifically the effect of whey supplementation on glycemic control, lipid metabolism, and child growth and health.
