The Impact of Acute Infections and Vaccination on Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and associated Conditions
The focus of my PhD project is immunometabolism. Using Danish national registry data, I will investigate the associations between infections and vaccinations, respectively, and type 2 diabetes (T2D) risk and progression. The project will focus on acute infections for which vaccines are available. It is well established that the immune system and metabolic processes interact bidirectionally. Acute infections may thus increase the risk of T2D, whereas vaccination may confer a protective effect.
Furthermore, accumulating evidence suggests that influenza vaccination can exert non-specific effects that modulate the immune system in an anti-inflammatory direction. Influenza vaccination may therefore be beneficial in chronic inflammatory conditions such as T2D.
