From Surgery to Pharmacotherapy: Long-Term Changes in Food Preferences and Muscle Mass in Obesity Treatment
Obesity is a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes, and effective obesity treatment is therefore central to diabetes prevention and management.
I investigate how different weight loss interventions — bariatric surgery, GLP-1 receptor agonists, and intensive lifestyle interventions — affect food preferences, dietary intake, and lean body mass in adults with severe obesity. GLP-1 receptor agonists, originally developed for type 2 diabetes treatment, are increasingly used as anti-obesity medications, yet their effects on muscle mass and long-term metabolic health remain poorly understood.
Optimizing these treatments may improve both weight outcomes and metabolic health, including reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes.
